During his career, Kukkapuro has been involved in designing numerous public spaces in collaboration with architects. In these projects, lighting has been an essential part of the functionality of the space and the use of furniture. Kukkapuro has emphasized both efficient task lighting and softer lighting that shapes the atmosphere of the space.

As a designer, Kukkapuro is a functionalist, whose work focuses on ergonomics, user experience and technical implementation. His work features a broad and recognizable color palette, based on the basic colors of constructivist art: blue, red, yellow, black and white. In the design process, the material determines the form.

Kukkapuro is known for his structural thinking, where components, joints and fastenings are visible and part of the look of the object. This has earned him the nickname “screwdriver”. The visible structure also makes the products maintainable and repairable, which has been a conscious choice for him.

Kukkapuro has stated that as his career progressed, his design principles have become simpler. Current influences, the properties of materials, and his long collaboration with artist Irmeli Kukkapuro (1934–2022) have shaped his thinking. Today, he summarizes his work in the principle of simplicity: preserving the essential and eliminating everything unnecessary.

Perhonen invites light and color to play, its gentle light provides space for dreaming.
